Motivation
What are your inner drives? What stimulates you? What entices you? What excites you? What motivates you?

My mission is to live my life fully and inspire others to do the same. Why do I do this, and why would I want to?

1. I want to live and experience my life fully!
2. I believe that by helping others, I help myself. I expand my own commitment to live fully when I see others do the same.

I am committed to creating, generating and fertilizing that "inner drive", that desire to stay motivated every day in my own life.

  • How do you get motivated?
  • How do you stay motivated?
  • How do you keep your organization motivated?

  • Ask yourself- What motivates me? Take a moment to write down three things that motivate you. Start asking yourself this question often (at least daily) or you will be plagued with just existing. Choose to wake up day after day to live fully, rather than just handling the next chore in front of you. Without motivation you will never reach your deepest desires, your full potential, and you will never experience your own greatness.

So, what gets you excited? What renews your energy when you appear to have no energy left? What lifts you up and inspires you to a greater cause? What music, speech, event, memory, person or place have you experienced that made you feel alive, have a purpose and a destination?

I am aware that many things motivate me, and I believe that most people are motivated by some of the following Motivators, I refer to as FGT - "Feel Good Things".

THE MOTIVATORS / FEEL GOOD THINGS
FALLING IN LOVE - the great human motivator. I never tire of that feeling of love. It is so intoxicating to feel loved and to give love. Do you remember a time when you were so in love you no longer needed food or sleep? Think about it, and notice how your sense of the moment changes. Remember falling into your lover with the sense of disappearing and losing yourself into the other person. I remember, as a teenager, riding my bike to see "my first love". Everyday I rode that bike, excited, unable to hold myself back, full of anticipation and energy. It didn't matter how tired I was or how far I needed to go; I wanted to be with her and nothing would stop me.

VICTORY - aha! the taste of winning, crossing the finish line first, hitting the winning run, scoring the winning goal, making a great tennis shot, riding a great wave, overcoming some obstacle, doing great on a test, quitting smoking.

SUCCESS - the sweet sensation of success. The desire to be "number one", to win, to experience victory is natural and common to everyone's psyche. And it goes beyond just our personal victories. Even watching others win and excel excites us as well. Reflect and recall some sporting event that left you inspired and motivated just because you experienced the victory. I expect you left with more energy than you brought to the event.

EXCELLENCE - Any demonstration in commitment and excellence. An act of heroism, extraordinary athletic demonstration, a great movie, Mother Theresa, a great speaker, a singer, the National Anthem, a great play or event. Every time I hear President Kennedy's Inaugural Address ("ask not what your Country can do for you, but what you can do for your Country") or Martin Luther King's Freedom Speech, I am moved deeply, elevated to a greater level of desire and hope in my own life and motivated to make a greater contribution. We are all motivated by these inspirations and "charged" by seeing others live at a level of excellence. That is why it is so important to surround yourself with these moments.

ATTENTION AND ADMIRATION - To be witnessed, admired, to be seen and to have someone's full attention. Being really seen and noticed by our parents, brothers or loved ones motivates us all. I believe we each have a responsibility to notice others doing well and share that with them. "Great Job"!, just two simple words, can carry a person through a whole day. It costs nothing for an organization to recognize someone, and the motivation for that person, as well as others, is priceless. It is critical that all people are admired in their moments of excellence. To be really seen and noticed is a powerful motivator for everyone. Parents should make a point of witnessing their children. Take the time today to verbally recognize others and see if it doesn't make you feel better.

EDUCATION - New information, training, new techniques, new discoveries, a new way of doing something that improves performance or expands knowledge inspires all people. We should all plan for time to spend on education and information that will inspire us. Pick up any book about any topic or visit any site on the Internet, and you are guaranteed to learn something. I go to at least one workshop every ninety days to get the motivation that comes from learning. I listen to tapes and read books to keep me inspired, motivated and positively charged (fueled up). Fuel yourself often; fuel your mind and your spirit.

INTERESTS - Then there are those things that just interest you. You don't always know why you are interested in some things, but no matter who you are, there are certain things that you ache to do, things that have inspired and moved you your whole life, almost as though this interest has always been a part of you. Have you always loved music or been drawn to the water, art, reading, animals, etc. Does planting a garden or working in the yard feel good? Does traveling to new places excite you? I believe there are interests in each of us that are sewn into our genetics, implanted in our DNA and as natural to each of us as water is to the ocean. Even the mention of these "interests" moves you to another level of motivation, inspiration and possibility.

Mention the movie Braveheart to me, and I immediately remember the end of the movie when Wallace (Mel Gibson) is being tortured to death and, refusing to break, yells out the word "freedom"! Even as I write this, my body overwhelmingly experiences joy, grief, desire and hope. I am moved when I hear the music to Rocky, or Queen's - Champions of the World.

Questions that will inspire you and the people within your organization
  • What motivates you?
  • What gives you joy?
  • What inspires you?
  • What is your purpose in life?
  • Why are you here?
  • What do you want to do?
  • If you could accomplish anything without fear of failure, what would you do?
  • If you could make a difference in the world, what would you do to make a difference.?
  • If you could live each day anyway you wanted, how would you live?

  • I ache to live for my true purpose in life. What sets us apart from other life forms is our desire and wonder for so much more than just existing from day to day. I believe we all wonder about our purpose. It really is so simple. If I live today as if it might be my last, I will choose to live it fully, with passion, desire and commitment.

What "inner drive, impulse, emotion or desire moves you to action"? What is it that motives you? Is it love, victory, success, excellence, attention and admiration, education, a particular interest? When you uncover your motivations in life, you will begin to live fully, with passion and commitment. I invite you to join me on a fascinating and exciting journey of discovery.
